What is a moon garden?

If you have a garden then you know that one of the best times of the year is when your flowers blossom especially on those spring days when the sky is clear and the first flowers of the year appear. What if you want to stroll out to your garden at night when the moon is full, how do the plants look then? Not as good as they are doing the day. But what is really interesting is that there are plants that bloom at night that have a glow about them that is sublime and mystifying. These plants are referred to as moon plants which many folks use in a moon garden.

Most moon flowers are white in color and an added bonus is that many of them are fragrant. They are visible at night especially when the moon is full without the help of outdoor lighting.

Some of the most popular moon flowers are…

  • Angel’s Trumpet – a shrub with trumpet shaped flowers that is easy to grow but comes with a warning that it is highly toxic. So much so that if you wouldn’t want pets or children around it due to its toxicity.
  • Moonflower – they have large fragrant flowers that bloom at night. They grow quite a bit each year and they also climb. But they are susceptible to frost.
  • Evening stock – is an heirloom flower that is very fragrant and can be grown in pots as well as garden beds.
  • Evening primrose – this is a spreading plant that comes in colors such as pink, yellow or white.  This fragrant plant is very easy to grow.

A moon garden is a fascinating and different way to enjoy flowers. Make sure that your location of the moon garden will receive the full benefits of direct moonlight.
